KC3 Essay Final
Many tourists come to Hawaii to swim in the beautiful beaches and to experience "paradise". Tourism helps to support the local economy. Over the past few years, tourism has been increasing by at least 2%, giving hope to Hawaii's government that their economy will thrive. The tourism industry is by far their biggest industry. However, Hawaii is so dependent on tourism, that without it, the jobs, tax revenues, and economy will be negatively impacted.
To begin with, no tourism equals a high unemployment rate for the residents of Hawaii. "Tourism is the biggest generator of jobs among the major economic sectors, supporting 168,000 jobs in Hawaii. Many people rely on tourists so that they can keep their job. Places such as hotels and attraction sites also depend on tourists to stay in business. "For every $1 million spent in direct visitor expenditures, tourism supports 11.2 jobs." This shows that the amount that visitors spend affects the amount of job openings. If tourism decreases, so will the amount of money that they spend, which leads to less job openings. Hawaii relies on tourists and their contribution to the economy to support their jobs.
Another reason why Hawaii is so dependent on tourism is because it plays a big part in their economy. "Tourism contributed to $1.5 billion in total state tax revenue in 2013, an incremental $30 million per year." Tax revenue is the government income due to taxation. Hawaii relies on tourism to bring in enough money to sustain their government. "DBEDT, the Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism, expects tax revenues to increase by 2.8% in 2016." Hawaii's tourism is increasing annually, which means that they are expecting more visitors. More visitors means more jobs and higher tax revenues. The tourism industry is continuing to grow at a steady rate as the years go by, a good sign for Hawaii and it's residents.
Tourism is by far Hawaii's biggest industry. "Hawaii's tourism industry generated $14.5 billion in total annual visitor spending, an average of $39 million per day." The amount that visitors spend each day contributes a lot to the overall economy. If the tourism industry suddenly dropped, Hawaii's economy would not be able to survive. "Hawaii is so dependent on tourism because that is the industry in which we have our true comparative advantage nowadays." Agriculture, which generates $2.9 billion and is accounted for 42,000 jobs, is Hawaii's second biggest industry. That means that tourism brings in 5 times the amount of money that agriculture does, and generates 4 times the amount of jobs. Tourisms contribution to the local economy of Hawaii is really large.
In conclusion, the job opportunities, tax revenues, and economy of Hawaii highly depends on tourism to be able to thrive. The amount of tourists that go to Hawaii, and the amount that they spend affects the amount of job openings. Tourism continues to be Hawaii's biggest industry, and is expected to grow over the next few years. However, Hawaii is too dependent on the tourists. If something, such as major airline closures or the increase of prices were to affect the amount of annual visitors, Hawaii's local economy would struggle.

The warm sun shines down on my face as I look at the acres of green grass surrounding me. This was my special place. A place where I can do what I love doing the most and play the sport that I've always loved. Soccer has been my passion ever since I was a little girl. The feeling that I get when I hear the ball hit the back of the net is indescribable. The butterflies that I get before every single game is a mixture of nerves and excitement. I've played hundreds of games, and yet my passion and dedication towards soccer has never changed. The soccer field is the one place I go to, to relieve my stress and anxiety, and to forget about my problems.
The main reason why I consider the soccer fields as my special place is because I can just be myself and not worry about what others think of me. Girls spit on the ground and swear at each other, but remain friends after the game. What happens on the field, stays on the field. Nobody remembers how bad you played in a game, or the penalty kick that you missed, or the shot that you didn't take. It's a place that is free of worries, a place that I look forward to every time I come. Never have I ever showed up at a soccer field and said, "I don't want to be here." This special place is where I escape reality and enjoy life without the stress of school, homework, and dramas. My favorite time to come to the soccer fields is right after it rains. The water droplets on the grass, the sun peeking out from the grey clouds, and the faint sound of swarming gnats makes the fields even more beautiful than it already is. I go there to get my mind off of things and just relax. Whenever I'm having a bad day, just knowing that I have a soccer game or practice cheers me up.
I step onto the field knowing that my parents will be proud of me no matter what. They taught me almost everything I know about soccer, and coached me growing up. They helped me to develop my footwork skills, and shaped me into the player that I am today. I know never to be cocky, to be respectful of all my coaches, even if I don't agree with what they are saying, and to be a team player. My mom and dad took the time to coach me, and spend their free time after work at the soccer fields. This makes the fields extra special, because it's a reminder to always be thankful of my parents. It reminds me of the long hours that they would spend watching our games and tournaments, and the times spent at the fields together as a family.
Everyone has a special place that they rely on when they are feeling stressed out or nervous. The soccer fields is not only the place that I go to relax, but to have fun! So many memories have been made at these fields, such as caking our teammates on their birthday, or having to use umbrellas to cover the stall when we use the bathroom (no doors)! The soccer fields is, and will always be my Querencia, my special place.

Picture Frame Paragraph by : Kelci Sumida and Kari Lau
Crash! The sound of the waves are especially loud during the winter season. At North Shore located in Oahu, Hawaii, this is the peak for all locals/tourists to come and observe the waves at its high time. Families like ours love to swim and catch the waves in the cool ocean to refresh ourselves since, it is still hot during the wintertime. Also, the smell of the ocean soothes our souls with its salty aroma. The salty aroma takes ourselves away from the crowded city. Not only that, the Matsumoto's Shave Ice stand, adds more onto the special experience during the winter. When you drive into the North Shore area, there is a barn shaped store with a sign that says, "M. Matsumoto Grocery Store." Then, immediately there's a long line that extends out the door waiting for the delicious shave ice. Our personal favorite to get shave ice are the fruity flavors of strawberry, and green apple. The fruity shave ice tastes invigorating from the tiresome day of catching the rough waves. Last, our favorite aspect of North Shore is the rustic scenery. Since, we are used to the usual landscape of buildings, traffic, crowds, etc a change of scenery is nice. In North Shore, there are old fashioned buildings that are unike the modern buildings we've grown accustomed to. Also, there is no traffic to bother us but, only smooth driving. In addition to that, there is a pure smell of beaches and trees unlike the smell of car gas and people. The pure aroma gives off a soothing sensation that you can't really get in the city. Along with the relaxing smell, there are various sounds that can only be found there. When we enter North Shore there are sounds of chirping birds. The birds chirp faint sounds of tweet, tweet, tweet and adds onto the rustic feel of North Shore.
These three aspects of North Shore are special to us and our family especially, during the wintertime. In the wintertime it seems as if the following aspects become more enhanced. For instance, the waves become bigger adding more fun into catching the rough waves. Not only that, the feel of the waves become more soothing since the size of it are bigger. Besides that, the taste of shave ice during the winter become more satisfying. Since, the waves are especially big during the wintertime it takes more of a toll on the bodies so, a refreshing bowl of shave ice invigorates us. The fruity aroma of strawberry and green apple add more onto the magical time of winter. Moving onto, the country landscape of North Shore. In our usual setting we always see the same old cities, traffic, and people but, in North Shore its different. The rustic appearance of North Shore includes barn like buildings, many trees, and its just country. Because, of the different setting from the city it is a refresher especially since we don't often visit there. In conclusion, North Shore is a special place we always go to especiallyduring, the wintertime.

My Special Place
The warm sun shines down on my face as I look at the acres of green grass surrounding me. This was my special place. A place where I can relax without a care in the world, and do what I love doing the most. Out of all the sports I played growing up, soccer has always been my passion. The feeling that I get when I hear the ball hit the back of the net is indescribable. The soccer field is the main place I like to go to when I'm stressed out or nervous about something. Sometimes I set up goals to practice shooting at, or sometimes I just work on my juggling and dribbling skills. As long as I have a soccer ball in front of my feet, I could spend hours at the field, trying to improve and learn new things. This special place means so much to me, because I practically grew up here. I would be at the soccer fields at least three times a week, whether it was for practices or for a game. I know that once I'm at the fields, all my problems go away.

CNN Chunky Paragraph
A recent study showed that the obesity levels in children and teenagers in the United States are higher than ever. Although we are consuming less calories, "we are a snacking nation", says Barry Popkin, a professor of nutrition. Studies show that children in the U.S. went from eating a little more than one snack a day in 1977, to almost three in 2006. The combination of sugary drinks and snacks can lead to big health problems, which is what the U.S. is experiencing right now. The obesity rates for children in the U.S. have increased by 17.5% since 2012. Compared to Canadians, our average rates are much higher than theirs. Researchers say that it's because of the economic differences between the two countries, but that is still no excuse. Hopefully, over the next few years, the amount of U.S. children diagnosed with obesity will significantly decrease.

Words From the Heart - Final Draft
People often think that being a twin means liking the same things and acting the same way. Growing up, we shared many things such as the same birthday and room, but one thing we didn't share was the same personality. She was more on the loud and wild side, while I was more of a easy going, sweet girl. These characteristics reminded my mom of the cartoon bird "Tweety", so that's what she started calling me.
As I grew older, I resembled the character Tweety a lot more. Whether it was the way I talked, or the fact that my head was too big for my body, the nickname stuck with me. My mom also said that she called me Tweety because it rhymed with sweetie. One thing that Tweety and I had in common was that barely anyone could understand us when we talked. I couldn't pronounce the letters "s", "r", and "c". Whenever I said something that no one could understand, my mom would laugh and say, "What Tweety?". This simple, two word question would make me burst out laughing, because just hearing my nickname made me smile.
The name Tweety was very special to me because none of my other sisters had a unique nickname like how I did. It was also special to me because only my mom calls me that. We were always close with each other, and I always looked up to her. We were both the youngest and probably the most spoiled. The nickname Tweety was something that only we shared, and that made our bond even stronger.
As the years went by, I began to outgrow my nickname. I no longer talked like Tweety, and my head wasn't as big for my body anymore. I also didn't like to be called Tweety when I played sports, because I wanted to sound tough, not weak. Although my mom rarely calls me this nickname, it still has a special place in my heart. Many people think that it's just a silly childhood nickname, but to me, it was much more than that. This simple name inspires me to become a better person. Whenever, I'm mad or frustrated, my mom tells me to be sweet, like Tweety bird. I would roll my eyes, but a few minutes later I would be smiling again.
Looking back at those days, I now realize the significance of that nickname, and what it meant to my mom and I. Every time Tweety appears on T.V., we always look at each other and smile. It was one of those things that only we can understand, and that's very special to me. This nickname reminds me of what my childhood was like, and I'll never forget it.

Hi! My name is Kelci Sumida and this is my blog, "English Is All Write :/". I picked this title because when I was younger, english was never one of my favorite subjects. I thought it was SO boring and it was the class that I dreaded the most. However, as I grew older, I learned that you need to have a positive attitude towards everything in life. Instead of counting down the minutes until class was over, I actually paid attention and listened to what the teacher was saying. It turns out, english is "all write" after all. The overall design of my blog was meant to be simple, but eye-catching. The vibrant colors of the sunset were meant to get people's attention. It's not too distracting, but it's not too plain either.
The world I come from is like an unopened treasure chest. You never know what's inside and what life has in store for you. My life is filled with adventure and new experiences. I love exploring new places and being outdoors. My hobbies include soccer, volleyball, going to the beach, and shopping. Without sports, I wouldn't be the person that I am today. Sports has taught me many life lessons, such as how to work with my teammates to get the job done. Going to the beach and mall are activities that I like to do in my free time, if I have any! I spend most of my time playing sports after school, so leisure time is very rare. Sometimes I have 3 practices in one day!
If I were to write a list of all the foods that I dislike, it would be never ending! I don't eat hamburgers, curry, fish, corn, mushrooms, macaroni and cheese, coconut, lobsters, and more. I'm a very picky eater, which makes it hard for my family when we're trying to agree on something to order for dinner. Other things that I dislike is when I'm talking to someone and they don't pay attention to me, and when I get blamed for something that I didn't do. Other than that, I'm always laughing and enjoying life, because you can never get this day back.
