Allusion Songs

Song: I see Fire
Artist: Ed Sheeran
Description: For the song, “I see fire” by Ed Sheeran, there is a hidden meaning referring to the story of the last supper from the bible. “Oh, should my people fall. Then surely I’ll do the same. Confined in mountain halls. We got too close to the flame.” This verse from the song relates to Jesus coming back to Earth to help his people from the original sin. When he sings “we got close to the flame,” it is referring to the devil that convinced Adam and Eve to eat that apple, which resulted us in getting the original sin. “And if we should die tonight. Then we should all die together. Raise a glass of wine for the last time.” This verse is self explanatory. In the bible, Jesus was preparing for his death the next day and he decide to have a last meal with all of his disciples. This was when he did the transubstantiation with the bread and wine. “I see fire. Blood in the breeze. And I hope that you remember me.” “This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” (Corinthians 11:23-25) The song lyric from the song matches up with what Jesus said during the last supper. Jesus was also sent down by God to spread the word about him. (And I hope that you remember me)

Song: Youth
Artist: Troye Sivan
Description: The song “Youth,” by Troye Sivan describes the feelings that Peter Pan had when he found out that he was growing old. “What if. What if we run away. What if. What if we left today. What if. We said goodbye to safe and sound.” Peter Pan was a boy that wanted to run away from all of his problems because he was afraid of what he was going to become when he is old. He was also an adventurer that seeked thrill and excitement every minute of his life. For a better life, Pan then moved to Neverland and lived with the fairies so that he would never have to grow old. One day we went through a girl’s window (Wendy) and asked her and her siblings if they wanted to go to Neverland with him. Neverland was a blank canvas that give kids the freedom to dream and be free. “My youth. My youth is yours. Trippin’ on skies, sippin waterfalls.” Peter Pan gave his mortal life to be with the fairies and lost boys in Neverland (my youth is yours). Since the fountain of youth is located in the Neverlands’, Troye Sivan implies that Peter Pan sips on the waterfall to keep his youthful self young.

Song: Girl On Fire
Artist: Alicia Keys
Description: Not only does the title refer to the hawaiian goddess Pele, but she also relates to the lyrics in the song too. Pele is a Hawaiian God that is describes as the goddess of fire, lightning, dance, wind, volcanoes, and violence. “No Kahiki mai ka wahine ‘o Pele, Mai ka ‘aina mai o Polapola, Mai ka punohu a Kane, Mai ke ao lapa i ka lani.” This ancient Hawaiian chant is translate to “The woman Pele comes from Kahiki, From the land of Polapola, From the rising mist of Kane, From the clouds that move in the sky.” In the song, Alicia Keys says, “She got her head in the clouds and she’s not backing down. Looks like a girl but she’s a flame. So bright, she can burn your eyes, better look the other way. You can try but you’ll never forget her name. She’s on top of the world.” Pele lives in Mauna Kea, the volcano which are as high as the clouds. She will never back down from her eternal fire pit.

Song: Kill Em’ With Kindness
Artist: Selena Gomez
Description: The song “Kill Em’ With Kindness,” was a reference to the bible verse, “If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the lord shall reward thee.” (Proverbs: 25:21-22) The bible suggests that the best way to “kill” someone is through random acts of kindness, for it will give your enemy a strange feeling towards you.

or

The song also refers to one of William Shakespeare’s play “Taming Of The Shrew: ” (Act 4, Scene 1) “And if she chance to nod I’ll rail and brawl, And with the clamor keep her still awake. This is a way to kill a wife with kindness.”The reason why Petrucio said this was to tame Kate’s nagging personality. He wanted to turn her into an obedient wife and “killing her with kindness” was the perfect way to do it. But for him, “killing with kindness” is interpreted as depriving Kate of sleep and food for a point of time until she becomes the type of “wife” that he wants.
